Turkmenistan clothing presentation

We had the privilege today to watch a clothing presentation by Shemshat Atayeva who is from Turkmenistan. She also does community service here at our school through UWA.

We learned some very interesting facts about her country. We learned that the men wear sheep wool hats and the women wear skullcaps.

Their favorite color is red so you will see that color most often in their clothing.
The women will wear wedding robes that take 6 months to make.

The embroidery on Shemshat's dress took 4 months to make. They use needles to make these intricate designs. Mothers and grandmothers teach embroidery before the daughters get married.

The jewelry they wear is mainly silver. Their pieces are very heavy, 30-35 kg or 66-77 pounds!!!!, so they only wear them on special occasions.

We learned that married women cover their head with a scarf to respect elderly people. The females always wear their hair in two braids.

All the teachers received a gift at the end of the presentation, a camel hair wool bracelet!

Here's a video Ms. Kaley took of the presentation :)
