week of April 6 |snapshot|

this week our focus moved from the life cycles of different bugs to the life cycles of different animals. we looked at chickens, turtles, snakes, salmon, and frogs specifically. S.K.6 S.K.6.a

we borrowed Ms. Brooke's class turtle, that they luckily found at the lake the week before this unit started because that's how things work around here ;), to observe on the day we studied the life cycle of sea turtles. super cool. and if the water isn't changed regularly, super stinky.

they especially enjoyed watching a short video about the alligator snapping turtle!

our Shared Reading book for the week was Mr. Whisper. they LOVED this book. super fun to read! ask them about Mr. Whisper!

all week, we enjoyed Egg Carton Math, a really fun and inexpensive math game. egg holes are labeled with numbers 0-9, 2 pom poms are placed inside, students close the carton and shake, open the carton, write down the two numbers where the pom poms landed and add them together. this can also be done for subtraction and multiplication. K-OA1

Dr. Howard's class stopped by to prepare us for our music video they will be shooting next week for Week of the Young Child.

It's a really catchy tune called Thingamajig by Lucky Diaz and The Family Jam Band.

and then they made thingamajigs!

on Friday to end our study, the students created animals!

this is what I told them:

You are a zoologist who has just discovered a new animal species. As every good scientist does, you will document your exciting finding. Design a fact sheet highlighting this new animal discovery. Be sure to include the following key pieces of information:

• your animal’s name

• your animal’s basic needs

• where your animal lives

• a colored illustration of your animal in its natural habitat.

(my inner grammar police noticed as I took the first picture "it's basic needs" instead of "its basic needs." I fixed this with white-out but I know it's still there :/ )

I love how they turned out though! they really used their imaginations!

limited centers:

dramatic play center- spring cleaning

art center- open

block center- add plastic snakes, frogs, and other creepy crawlies and build habitats

math center- Habitat Sort- students look at a picture of an animal and decide which habitat

it belongs in
