last week's snapshot

we had a lot of sickness in our small town the week of the 12th. the flu usually hits around here during Christmas and then again after the New Year. we had some students that were out sick and some students that were kept out so they would stay healthy.  we also had two teachers that were very ill. but we still had fun while we were here!

one of the fun activities we did was make sock snowmen! Ms. Annie saw this activity on Faith Tap earlier this month and it was a lot of fun to do and very easy, too!

"In just a few minutes you can create something adorable and imaginative with things you already have lying around the house. This young woman shows how to take a sock cut in half, tie one end, and then fill it with rice. She then shapes it and ties another string, and then you are ready to decorate him to suit your personality. What an adorable craft to do yourself or with a child!"

Ms. Kim also froze some classroom objects and we kept revisiting them throughout the day discussing the progress of the melting and how we might go about getting the objects out. the student loved this!

the girls had a blast playing in Ms. Kim's big pile of instasnow, too!

last week, we continued our Winter Wonderland unit with our discussion on the 5 Senses. we wondered, how can we use our eyes to discover winter? we bundled up and took a short walk outside around the school to look for signs of winter. (S.K.7 ) we saw people wearing jackets, brown grass, the thermometer said it was cold, and there were trees with no leaves.

then we had a picnic for our afternoon snack!
we wondered, how can we use our mouths to discover winter? so we had a winter tasting and drank some hot cocoa, tasted some peppermint sticks, strawberry marshmallows,  and peppermint marshmallows. then voted on our favorites! (S.K.7)

we wondered, how can we use our ears to discover winter? so. we bundled up and took a short walk outside around the school to listen for signs of winter. (S.K.7) we could hear the wind and our ears were cold!
we wondered, how can we use our noses to discover winter?  we knew we could smell firewood burning and smell hot cocoa. we made a special snack ... a fruit snowman! (S.K.7)

How can we use our hands/skin to discover winter? we knew we could feel the cold and breeze on your skin and the wind push or pull you. (S.K.7)

our bubble map!

the students learned a new math game last week. they were in teams of 3. each student read their math equation card and decided the answer and placed it in front of the correct tent card, 0-5. they loved it!
