the girls getting measured for their costumes :)

we continued our discussion on trees today. we read

"THE GIVING TREE for our time.

Once there was a grand old tree, whose roots sank deep into the earth and whose arms reached high into the sky. Every spring the grand old tree flowered and bore cherries for the squirrels and birds that made their homes in her leafy branches. And every year, seeds from the tree scattered in the wind, along with many millions of leaves. Mary Newell DePalma creates an emotional tale of life and renewal, of nature's bounty and quiet balance, illustrated with simple images made powerful with vivid colors and moving compositions."

"A told B,
and B told C
"I'll meet you at the top
of the coconut tree."
Countless children -- and their parents -- can joyfully recite the familiar words of this beloved alphabet chant. The perfect pairing of Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault's lively rhymes, and Caldecott Honor artist Lois Ehlert's bright, bold, cheerful pictures made Chicka Chicka Boom Boom an instant hit and a perennial favorite."

our question of the day:
Are you taller than this tree?

and we played the name dance. the students could choose to show us what their name dance looked like. fun!

we wore the color grey for "wear it wednesday" this week is in honor of those who suffer or have suffered from diabetes.

today's snapshot

this morning we made U's with play-doh

we sketched a tree as we sang The Green Grass Grows and added a few things to our tree as well at the end.

we discussed tree sizes: trees that are bigger, smaller, and the same size as us.

our question of the day:

we went on a tree hunt looking for various trees around the school. short trip, quite chilly :)

we played Leaping Sounds where the students had to listen for the beginning sound of their name and then follow the directions. for example "If your name begins with the /k/ sounds, hop on one foot."

/r/ spin around

/t/ run to Ms. Kim's door and back

/k/ run to the water fountain and back

/t/ do a flip

/a/ jump up and down

this afternoon we explored with linking cubes

even made some patterns
went on a U hunt using newspapers and ads

wrote in our journals

and learned to draw trees using shapes.
our tree stories for today:

"No one wants to hear the little boy play his ukelele anymore...Clink, clunk, clonk. And no one wants to watch his father make things disappear...Zoop! Zoop!
Until the day the fearsome giant Abiyoyo suddenly appears in town, and all the townspeople run for their lives and the lives of their children! Nothing can stop the terrible giant Abiyoyo, nothing, that is, except the enchanting sound of the ukelele and the mysterious power of the magic wand."

"Dear Kids, A long time ago, when you were little, Mom and I took you to where we wanted to build a house. . . . I remember there was one tree, however, that the three of you couldn’t stop staring at. . . .
After the family spares him from the builders, Steve the tree quickly works his way into their lives. He holds their underwear when the dryer breaks down, he’s there when Adam and Lindsay get their first crushes, and he’s the centerpiece at their outdoor family parties. With a surprising lack of anthropomorphizing, this is a uniquely poignant celebration of fatherhood, families, love, and change."
