today's snapshot

(((This is only going to be a partial post because I am leaving at 1 today for a doctor's appointment. I will post pics from the afternoon on Monday.))) We had a wild, busy morning! We had Science with Ms. Annie and Ms. Jenna first.

Ms. Annie read the book Anansi and His Children from our Creative Curriculum study.  The students discussed what all they knew about spiders and then they discussed spider webs. Ms. Annie’s essential question was “Why do insects stick to spider webs, but the spiders don’t?”.  Ms. Annie made a web out of masking tape and the students felt it and said it was sticky.  The kids pretended to be bugs stuck to the web.  Then they dipped their fingers in cooking oil and touched the tape again. They realized that with the oil on their fingers they didn’t stick to the tape. The students learned that spiders have oil on their legs that prevent them from sticking to their webs! So, now the students are able to answer the question “Why do insects stick to spider webs, but the spiders don’t?”.

Then UWA's Chinese students stopped by for a visit. They gave the students name tags that had their name written in English and Chinese. We had already discussed long-tailed swallows in preparation for their visit. They taught us a song about a long-tailed swallow.

The students gave our friends, Sharon and Fay, a tour of the classroom and then they colored a picture of a long-tailed swallow.

See you next month, Sharon and Fay!

This afternoon we still have Kaitlyn Grace's birthday party, the UWA Cheerleaders and Luie visit, centers, and library to go!
We wish you a very happy birthday tomorrow, Kaitlyn!
And best of luck to our UWA Tigers and Coach Hall as the play Mississippi College in our first home game of the season. Tomorrow is also UWA Family Day!
