Monday we learned all about President's Day, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln!
During math, we did the Penny Spill.
For 3 minutes, the students recorded if their penny landed on heads or tails with tally marks.
Then we totaled our tallies up!
And who is on the penny??? You don't say!!!
Next, we made All About America! emergent readers.
Then we learned all about George and Abe and compared them.
Here's our summary:
Here's our awesome George Washington Craftivity!
Head over to Teachers Pay Teachers or Mrs. Freshwater's Class to grab this freebie!
Wednesday we had our dental health lesson with Ms. Qyuinna, Eian's mom, from Dr. Holley's office.
We discussed good and bad foods for our teeth.
Looked at some tools we see in her office.
She modeled how brushing and flossing remove plaque and food and cavity bugs from our teeth with Legos and play-dough. So cool!
Then the students dressed up as teeth, a dentist, a dental hygienist, and an assistant.
They brushed and flossed all the cavity bugs away!
Watch this fun video to see them in action!
Tuesday we began learning about polar animals.
We compared them each day to a similar Alabama animal.
We compared the arctic fox vs. red fox...
the arctic wolf vs. red wolf...
the snowy owl vs. the barn owl...
and the polar bear vs. the black bear.
While learning about the barn owl I told the students that they communicated in different sounding shrieks which have unique communication meanings, like we have different words that have different meanings. I asked if any of them had heard a barn owl screech and much to my delight, none of them recalled. So...here's my video :D
We started our Mystery Letter 100 Charts during Morning Work this week. They have taken to it quickly! And enjoy whispering the "mystery" in my ear before going to open centers, too! ;)
In math, we talked about mazes. We discussed the directions we use: frontwards, backwards, 90 degree angles, and 45 degree angles and other places we see those angles. After completing the maze you see below, we put the same maze in a sheet protector (without the end circle) and the students placed a circle in a spot of their choosing. They then swapped with a partner who tried to complete the maze. Such fun!
In Shared Reading, I read the students The Chubby Little Snowman.
They had to decide what the snowman could use for a nose since the little bunny at the snowman's carrot nose!
One of our art projects this week was Torn Paper Art. After looking at some completed pieces on the smartboard, the students felt confident they could do the same. And got busy.
And just like any artist would, they named their piece of art.
And what do you do after learning about polar bears? You paint polar bears...using marshmallows!!!
I found this idea on Clown and Poodle.
Check out this early spring weather! Thanks, Punxsutawney Phil!
