today's snapshot

what a busy day!!! I love days like today!
first we practiced writing our final letter on the smartboard. next week we will begin practicing our numbers.

we took a walking field trip to the UWA Jack Pleasant Greenhouse and visited with Mr. Sam Ledbetter, the greenhouse manager. I have had the pleasure of knowing Sam for many years and worked for him while in undergraduate school at his florist. My grandmother opened a flower shop in the 1960's in Thomasville, so growing up in the business made me feel right at home with Sam. I could talk to him for hours about plants (even though I didn't inherit the family's green thumb gene). He also keeps downtown Livingston looking beautiful. If you ever have any questions, Sam is your man.
ok, so back to the field trip. We started off touring the greenhouse and seeing all the wonderful plants Mr. Sam and his crew take care of. We saw many plants we recognized and some we learned about.

baby bananas!!!!!!!!!!

then Mr. Sam showed us an example of a deciduous tree, which my awesome students knew all about.

and an example of an evergreen, which AGAIN my students could talk about. :D

here is an example of a flower, Jasmine.

and if you look closely, an example of a berry.

Mr. Sam discussed the parts of a tree: leaves and branches. AGAIN, check.

and here we are in front of the Jack Pleasant Greenhouse.

on the way back we spotted a birdhouse and Mr. Sam believes some bluebirds have taken up living here.
***a special thank you to Mr. Sam for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with us***

we also spotted some wisteria.

then we scoped out the perfect spot for our picnic later. you'll have to keep reading to find out all about that.

here is another pic of the students selling cookies and lemonade. I'm going to have to video these conversations for you!

our question of the day:
what do you think happened to this tree?

fell down

a dinosaur knocked it over

tornado

this afternoon we had our tree-grown food picnic! we feasted on apples, oranges, grapefruits, pineapple and oranges. thank you to all the parents who donated fruit!
