Ant Hill lesson

We had a spectacular visit from an associate Biology professor at UWA this morning for our science lab!!!!!!!!!!! Dr. Wymer educated us about ants and their habits. Here's a summary of what we learned:
  • Ants sting; not bite.
  • Anthills can be taller than us! Yikes!
  • Anthills have different tunnels and rooms just like our houses.
  • Check out this YouTube video to see the tunnels and rooms in an abandoned anthill. I cannot believe how big they are! http://youtu.be/ozkBd2p2piU
  • The rooms are for keeping babies, food, etc...
  • There are 4 different kinds of ants: 1 queen, boy ants, worker ants, and soldier ants.
  • We learned to play an anthill game. Ms. Annie was the queen, Dr. Wymer was the boy ant, Kyla and Jack were the soldier ants that protected the entrance to the anthill, Jackson, Maggie, and Kennadi were the worker ants who went outside the anthill to find food (Smarties :) )for EVERYONE!
What an amazing lesson! A special thank you to Dr. Wymer!
