the rest of the first week of school snapshot

we are so excited to have Carol Merrill Academy of Dance again this year. and lucky!
if you were not able to come to orientation, information went home in mailboxes this week.
the packet and registration is due Tuesday, August 26th.

students from last year enjoyed showing off skills they still remember :)

we focused on feelings Wednesday.
after reading Chrysanthemum, we thought of what we could say to Chrysanthemum if we went to her school.

"Chrysanthemum thinks her name is absolutely perfect—until her first day of school. "You're named after a flower!" teases Victoria. "Let's smell her," says Jo. Chrysanthemum wilts. What will it take to make her blossom again?"

here is a picture of our Chrysanthemum mobile.

each afternoon as our 'goodbyes,' we review what we learned and talk about our favorite part of the day.
each student writes down their favorite part to share with you.

we had our first music class with Ms. Poole Thursday morning.
the students are already practicing for the Grandparents program next month!

after reading
"If you take a mouse to school, he'll ask you for your lunch box. When you give him your lunch box, he'll want a sandwich to go in it. Then he'll need a notebook and some pencils. He'll probably want to share your backpack, too . . ."

and reading
"Follow Bailey the dog as he gets ready and goes to school. Should he wear the red or blue collar? Both are so fashionable! Will he be late? That squirrel is a distraction! And what about Bailey's homework? Would you believe he ate it? That is what dogs do, after all."

we discussed invitation wording and made our own invitations inviting our favorite stuffed animals to school!

in science, discussed objects we can see in the sky unaided.
then the students observed the sky from the front yard and recorded what they saw.

and of course, the boys yelled "Bumblebee!!!!!"

then we came back in and made a vocabulary list.

the students brought in their favorite stuffed animals for show and tell on Friday.
I'm so happy they accepted their invitation to come to school ;)

we also have Chinese lessons each Friday with our GA, Mr. Bowen.
Today, Mr. Bowen taught us how to say parts of our body in Chinese.
We focused on our head, hair,  eyes, nose, ears, and mouth.
We even played a game where we stood up and made motions with each body part and named it in English, then in Chinese.
We also reviewed some words like Mama, Daddy, Brother, Thank You, and Hello.

here are a few journal postings from the week:

free writing Fridays:

and a few creations the students wanted to share :)

Ms. Ross read Pete the Cat The Wheels on the Bus and we watched the video on YouTube.
we <3 Pete!!!

Ms. Ross also read Chrysanthemum and the students also learned and discussed nicknames.

I showed them a picture of delphinium, which is also a character in the book.

Friday, the students learned how to check out books. we will be checking out books every Friday and they will be due back on Monday. I will try to help remind you :)
