don't be a litter bug!

This morning we began practicing writing 5's the correct way.

we are also recycling boxes and paper towel tubes and making guitars in preparation for our surprise visitor.
messy fun!

Kinsley's mom was kind enough to visit our classroom and share with us her talent of playing the guitar. She is a very talented singer and artist!

she let each student strum a few notes :)

thank you, Ms. Becky, for sharing your awesome talent with us!

our question of the day:

we discussed litter (trash that is not where it belongs. instead of being in a garbage can or recycling bin, it's on the ground). we looked at different forms of litter, on land and water.

don't be surprised if you hear us saying "don't be a litter bug!" we will be using this saying all this week!

and then we watched Donald Duck in The Litterbug

we also read a Charlie and Lola book,

"After Charlie convinces Lola to recycle her old toys instead of throwing them away, Lola discovers a recycling competition. If she can recycle one hundred plastic, metal, and paper items, she can get her very own real live tree to plant. But she only has two weeks, so Lola decides to ask her classmates to help. They turn out to be extremely very good recyclers indeed."

this afternoon we played a game I made using bottle tops from my powerzero addiction days.
you can find lots of recycling activities on my Pinterest board.
I traced circles on a piece of donated cardboard and then wrote lower case letters in each circle. Then I glued foam upper case letters on the bottle tops. The students had to match the upper and lower case letters. Great and fun way to assess at the end of the year and a great way to recycle!

we also made bottle top art. I sat out different sizes of bottle tops and several colors of paint and let the students have at it!

journal topic:

we also finished our guitars we started this morning and had a jam session before library :D

happy early Cinco de Mayo!

we were donated some pumpkin plants and each class got to plant two in our shape garden this morning.

we also practiced our 4's one last time on the smartboard.

we had such a fun day! we learned all about Cinco de Mayo!
we read some Cinco de Mayo books

we learned new words like mariachi band, sombrero, and pinata.
then we watched several Mexican hat dances on YouTube.

\

and then we thought, that didn't look to difficult so we did it ourselves! :D

here we are with our homemade maracas

my videos were taking an long time to upload to Vimeo today so I will have to post the Mexican hat dances on Monday :(

we had a special snack today, too. we ate Mexican flag dessert cups at our fiesta!

then it was time to bust open our pinata and see what was inside!
