I am an early childhood teacher who taught preschool for 8 1/2 years, 2 years of K4, and ending my first year in K5. All at UWA Campus School! Due to the possibility of inclement weather, we are rescheduling our Egg Hunt. It will now be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 pm. Please send candy-filled eggs and baskets, or bags, in the morning.
The parties will still be held on Thursday morning as planned.
We talked about how the fought over buttering their bread on the top or bottom and how they could have just done it whatever way they wanted and gotten along just fine.

We also made anI Like Apples emergent reader, focusing on the sight word "like."

Friday was SWAP (Stations With Awesome People).
Since we are finishing up our last week of Seuss, we did another Seuss SWAP :)
Dr. Minear's class helped us this week and will take over next week.
In my room, the students watched a portion of Bartholomew and the Oobleck to start our lesson. We talked about what the students thought oobleck might look like, sound like, smell like, and taste like after we watched the book. We then looked at our Morning Message. (The K5 class was asked to look for words they recognized and then circle them.)
The students were really excited to learn that they were going to make oobleck! The students were very helpful in making our oobleck. We made sure to understand not to eat or taste the oobleck because it has glue and Borax as two of the ingredients, too.
After, I rinsed the oobleck, the students enjoyed feeling and smelling the oobleck and making observations. They realized that some of their predictions were correct! We also compared it to a similar book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The oobleck will be kept in a container in the discovery center in the classroom for continued open-ended play!
Here's the recipe!
You will need: 2 cups of water, 1 cup of glue, 2 tablespoons of Borax (it is found in the laundry detergent aisle).
* Mix 1 cup of the water with the 1 cup of glue.
* In a separate bowl, mix the remaining cup of water with the Borax
and a few drops of food coloring if desired.
*Pour the Borax and water mixture into the glue/water mixture SLOWLY while stirring.
*Once it becomes rubbery, stop pouring in the borax mixture!
*Pour off the excess liquid and let the kids enjoy using this!
In Mrs. Byrne's room, they read the book My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss. They discussed how we can have many feelings throughout the day depending on our circumstances. They made a chart of how everyone was feeling on Friday. Next, they put drops of many different colors of paint on a paper doll. They added marbles and rolled the marbles around inside a box on top of their paper doll to make the doll have many colored feelings. Last, they learned to sing a version of "If You're Happy and You Know It" with various feelings including happy, angry, surprised, sick and sleepy!
In Mrs. Angie and Miss Allie's room, they watched Daisy-Head Mayzie. The book is about a human schoolgirl named Mayzie who one day suddenly sprouts a bright white daisy from her head. It causes alarm in her classroom, family, and town, until an agent makes her a celebrity. The Cat in the Hat helps Mayzie to understand her problem and persuade her to go back home. The students enjoyed looking for the Cat in the Hat throughout the book as they watched the story. After the story, students were asked if they have ever felt lonely before. They talked also about the importance of family and friendship. The students then made a daisy headband of their own that resembled Mayzie’s from the story!
Ms. Alison read the story Hop On Pop to the students during SWAP. After reading the story, they talked about all the things that made a "popping" sound. They listed each on chart paper and counted how many words they came up with in each class. Next they had a taste contest in each class to see which flavored popcorn was the class favorite: Cheese or Butter Popcorn. Once they tasted the popcorn, they graphed their favorite flavor of popcorn. Ms. Alison said that all the children's favorite taste in popcorn was "cheese" by far!
